Marlow Series Pre-Concert Lectures
The John E. Marlow Guitar Series was started by Tim Healy and Regis Ferruzza in the 1990's after the unexpected passing of John Marlow, a teacher, performer, composer, arranger and important figure in the classical guitar community of the greater Washington DC area. Each year, the series presents a full season of concerts featuring classical guitarists of impeccable artistry from around the world. Every concert is an event with pre-concert lectures, receptions, artist meet-and-greets and educational outreach. I have been invited to give pre-concert lectures on multiple occasions and look forward to future events.
February 23, 2019 – Berta Rojas
Berta Rojas' program included music by Frederico Moreno-Torroba, Manuel Ponce and Agustin Barrios Mangore. My lecture celebrated interconnectivity and shared stories of composers and the concert artists who bring their works to life. I created Spotify playlists to correspond with the lecture. February 25, 2017 – Antigoni Goni
My lecture topic was presented in honor of Women's History Month, which is celebrated in the US during the month of March. With only a short time to cover a large topic, I offered an introduction to the education, accomplishments and music of Francesca Caccini, Emilia Giuliani, Madame Sydney Pratten, Vadah Olcott-Bickford, Ida Presti, Maria Luisa Anido and Luise Walker.
October 22, 2016 – Jason Vieaux
I had the privilege of giving a pre-concert lecture before Jason Vieaux's performance for the Marlow Guitar Series. I focused on the topic of arranging since Vieaux would be performing his well-regarded arrangements of works by figures such as Pat Metheny and Duke Ellington. I discussed the reasons a performer may choose to make his/her own arrangements as well as some technical aspects of the process. We also listened and compared works in their original form to various arrangements.
November 21, 2015 - Chia-Wei Lin
Long-time Marlow Series lecturer, Larry Snitzler, had a scheduling conflicted and I was invited to fill in as the guest speaker before Chia-Wei Lin's debut concert for the Marlow Series. His program was quite varied and included works by Milan, Mudarra, Bach, Giuliani, Chen, Pasieczny, and Moscardini. I chose to discuss the Renaissance works of Milan and Mudarra, sharing insights about early music for guitar and vihuela.
