Biography
Candice Mowbray is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts
degree and earned a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance from
Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. In addition to degrees in guitar,
she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music composition from Shepherd University
in West Virginia. She has studied classical guitar extensively with
guitarist and composer Dr. Glenn Caluda, a former student of Aaron Shearer, and
currently studies guitar with Berta Rojas. She participated in lessons
and conferences at Le Domaine Forget in Quebec, the National Guitar Workshop in
Connecticut, the Alexandria Guitar Festival, and the Guitar Foundation of
America Conference. She has competed nationally and performed in
masterclasses with many internationally renowned artists including Angel
Romero, Sharon Isbin, Roland Dyens, Adam Holzman, Ron Pearl, Eduardo Isaac,
Ricardo Cobo, and Julian Gray. In 2004 she was one of only two persons
selected to perform in Sharon Isbin's masterclass at the First World Guitar
Congress in addition to having her biographical writings published in the
program for the landmark event.
Mowbray has dedicated a great portion of her time to teaching
guitar as well as music history and theory. She has taught for Shenandoah
Conservatory, Shepherd University, Mount Saint Mary's University, Hagerstown
Community College, and Frederick Community College and during the summer
months for the National Summer Music Workshop "Dayjams" and the
Virginia State Governor's School for gifted guitar students. She founded
the Western Maryland Guitar Salon which met between 2003-2007, published a
quarterly newsletter "Guitar News", and founded the first ever
Hagerstown Community College Guitar Orchestra. She is the organizer of
the annual Hagerstown Community College Guitar Mini-Festival. She is
author of "Guitar Notes", a method book for group guitar instruction
and "A Study Guide for Music Appreciation" published by Pearson
Customs. She appears as a guest lecturer speaking on topics pertinent to
music history, theory, and pedagogy, and has volunteered her time by serving on
guitar festival committees. Mowbray gives 50-70 musical
performances per year consisting of solo concerts, chamber music recitals,
lectures, and private engagements.
Mowbray plays a 2005 John Price concert classical guitar and a
Takamine TC132SC.
Mowbray is a member of the Baltimore Classical Guitar
Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Guitar Foundation of America.
