Biography

Noted for her "beautiful tone" and "sensitive music-making", guitarist Candice Mowbray is recognized by audiences and colleagues for her musicality, technique, and depth of expression in performance.  Her programming displays her versatility by featuring modern works by Ida Presti, Maximo Diego Pujol, and Arnold Dumond wonderfully programmed with Classical works by composers like Fernando Sor and Dionisio Aguado. 


Mowbray has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and lecturer for many concert series and festivals including the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Series, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Recital Series, 

the Bethlehem Guitar Festival, and the Ibero-American Guitar Festival

. Mowbray was a finalist at the 2010 Sierra Nevada Guitar Competition, was featured in Classical Guitar Magazine's "Letter from New York" and in Maryland Public Television's Our Town documentary, and named one of the "Top Five People to Watch" by Hagerstown Magazine.


Mowbray is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree and earned a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. She studied guitar with Dr. Glenn Caluda and Berta Rojas and has furthered her studies in masterclasses, private lessons, and workshops many internationally renowned artists including Angel Romero, Sharon Isbin, Roland Dyens, Eduardo Isaac, Ron Pearl, Martha Masters, Denis Azabagic, Nathaniel Gunod, Julian Gray, Maximo Diego Pujol, Nicholas Goluses, Ricardo Cobo, Adam Holzman, and Victor Villadangos.


Mowbray is an experienced instructor having taught applied guitar and related music courses for Shenandoah Conservatory, Shepherd University, Mount Saint Mary's University, Hagerstown Community College, and Frederick Community College. She has taught for the National Summer Music Workshop "Dayjams" and the Virginia State Governor's PAVANE program for gifted guitar students. She has given masterclasses and presented workshops on guitar technique at the Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy, the Mid-Atlantic Guitar Ensemble Festival, and the Hagerstown Community College Guitar Mini-Fest.

Mowbray has sought to increase educational opportunities and broaden the audience for classical guitar in her local community through a number of projects including organizing and conducting ensembles, offering group and private lessons, performing, and organizing and promoting concerts. 

Mowbray's debut CD Solo Guitar is presented by the Falling Mountain Music label. She looks forward to recording a new CD in the near future. 

Mowbray is also the author of the Music Appreciation Workbook published by Pearson Customs. 


Mowbray is a member of the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society, the Guitar Foundation of America, and the Washington County Arts Council.  She performs on a 2005 John Price classical guitar and a replica 19th century LaCote style guitar built by Joseph Mayes.
